Shimla: Himachal Pradesh Election Watch (HPEW) has analyzed affidavits of all 68 newly elected MLAs in Himachal Pradesh elections 2012. Out of the 68 newly elected MLAs, 21% or 14 MLAs have declared criminal charges against them pending in the court.
In 2007 assembly elections, 26 MLAs or 39% MLAs declared criminal cases against themselves.
Amongst all the major parties, INC has 10 (28%) MLAs out of 36 whereas BJP has 3 (12%) out of 26 MLAs who have declared criminal cases against themselves. Out of these with declared criminal cases, 5 have declared serious criminal cases like forgery, abetment of suicide, kidnapping etc. BJP has 2 such MLAs where the newly elected INC has 3 such MLAs.
Vinay Kumar of INC elected form Sri Renukaji constituency has charges of abetment of suicide against him whereas Ravinder Singh (BJP) from Dehra constituency has charges related to kidnapping against him. Anirudh Singh of INC from Kasumpti constituency has charges related to theft against him in the court.
INC’s Anirudh Singh has declared corruption cases pending against him. The other MLA with charges of corruption against him is former Union Minister and the newly appointed CM of the state, Mr. Virbhadra Singh.
65% MLAs out of 68 in the newly elected Assembly are crorepatis. INC has 26 crorepati MLAs out of 36 and BJP has 13 crorepati MLAs out of 26. In 2007 assembly elections, only 20 or 29% MLAs were crorepatis.
