Three killed in Maharashtra building collapse

Thane (Maharashtra), April 4 (IANS) At least three people were killed and 22 others injured after a seven-storey building came crumbling down here, officials said.

Officials said that at least 15 more people are feared to be trapped under the debris and chances of any of them being pulled out alive are bleak. Out of the 22 people who have been rescued with the help of locals, five are in critical condition.

Disaster control officials said the incident took place a little after 6:30 pm following which firemen rushed to the spot with a medical team and began rescue operation.

At least 50 people occupied the unauthorised building up to the fifth floor, while the sixth and seventh floors were vacant. The eighth floor of the building was under construction, officials said.

Municipal Commissioner R.A. Rajeev and District Collector P. Velarasu are supervising the relief operations.
