Born and raised in the serene town of Jhakri, Himachal Pradesh, Shivam has risen to become a key innovator in the rapidly evolving world of automotive technology. Today, he leads a team of 16 system and safety architects at a Silicon Valley startup, where they are pioneering the development of Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) architecture for major automotive OEMs. This groundbreaking workd empowers legacy manufacturers to compete with industry disruptors like Tesla and counter the rapidly growing dominance of Chinese OEMs, reshaping the future of transportation. The rise of Chinese OEMs in the global automotive market has been fueled by their ability to quickly innovate and adapt. They have led the charge in areas like EV technology, affordability, and advanced connectivity solutions. Shivam’s work addresses these challenges head-on, equipping American and global OEMs with cutting-edge SDV platforms designed for scalability, adaptability, and technological excellence. These platforms enable vehicles to evolve seamlessly through over-the-air updates, keeping them competitive throughout their lifecycle. Beyond that, they lay the foundation for future advancements in autonomous and connected driving. The result? Legacy automakers not only close the technology gap but also set new benchmarks in safety, efficiency, and user experience, achieving a 20% reduction in development time and a 15% increase in vehicle efficiency.
A Journey of Vision and Innovation:
Shivam’s path to leadership began in Jhakri, inspired by his father, a civil engineer. Charting his own course, he pursued a degree in mechanical engineering at VIT University. While there, he co-founded Team Pravega, an FSAE (Formula SAE) team that built and raced formula-style cars internationally, showcasing his early drive to innovate.
His passion for motorsports and engineering led him to contribute to the launch of India’s first Formula 1 Grand Prix, earning certification from the AMG Driving Academy in the process. This hands-on experience further deepened his technical expertise and competitive edge.
In 2012, Shivam moved to the United States to pursue a Master’s degree in Automotive Engineering at Clemson University’s International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR). At CU-ICAR, he joined Deep Orange 5, an ambitious program where students built a fully functional concept car in partnership with General Motors. The car was later showcased at the SAE World Congress, marking a pivotal moment in Shivam’s academic journey.
Paving the Way for Autonomous Driving:
After earning his degree, Shivam joined Ford Motor Company in 2014 as a Controls Engineer. There, he contributed to the development of Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS), integrating technologies like adaptive cruise control and autonomous parking into Ford’s product lineup for the first time.
In 2018, Shivam transitioned to the forefront of autonomous driving, taking on leadership roles at Motional and later TuSimple. At TuSimple, Shivam’s team achieved a historic milestone by successfully completing the world’s first 80-mile driverless truck operation. This achievement, conducted on public roads in Arizona without driver intervention, demonstrated the future of autonomous trucking, a technology poised to save countless lives by reducing accidents caused by human error.
