Himachal changes vacation schedule for Government Schools

Shimla: Faced with varied climatic zones that range from minus 30 degree Celsius temperatures in winter in places like Lahaul and Spiti to sizzling summer temperatures of over 40 degree Celsius in Una district, the Himachal Pradesh education department has come out with a new vacation schedule for government schools that will come into force from the 2014-15 academic session.

In all there are to be a total of 52 vacation days in an academic year for both winter and summer closing schools except Kinnaur, Pangi and Bharmour, where schools will remain closed for 62 days.

This new schedule of vacations has been divided into three phases i.e. winter break, monsoon break and festive break.himachal school

For summer closing schools other than Kullu and Lahaul Spiti winter break will be form 7th Jan to 16th Jan, festive break of 6 days will be during Diwali and monsoon break will be from 25th June to 30th July for 36 days.

Rescheduling of vacations particularly in summer closing schools does not coincide with the purpose these vacations are given. The vacations finish but vigorous rainy season remain continue. As a consequent of it many students who are to reach schools by crossing some types of water hurdle face troubles which many a times end in the sacrifice of life of the pupils. Parents keep on waiting their offspring’s at home. But their wait ends with reception of dead body of their wards.
My opinion and suggestion is that rainy season-break must cover the whole rainy season and not merely of counting the days of vacations. It must be w.e.f. 1st July to 31st August. This was pattern in the past and was very satisfactory and scientific.
Innocent pupils who died due to heavy rains, are not meant to meet such catastrophe. This simply can be concluded due to unmindful change in the vacation schedule and not giving and serious thought and anticipating the consequences. Please rethink and prepare a schedule which is least harmful and most acceptable.
