Committee to check crime against women in Himachal

Shimla: In the wake of the Delhi gang-rape, Himachal Pradesh Tuesday announced it is constituting a special committee to check crimes against women.

“A special committee headed by a DIG-level officer will be in place within a week’s time to check crime against women,” Director General of Police (DGP) B. Kamal Kumar told reporters here.

B. Kamal Kumar assumed the charge of the top post Tuesday.

The committee would review all cases related to crimes against women at least once in two months, said the officer, who was earlier heading the home guards and fire services.

Sources said Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Satwant Atwal would head the special committee.

B. Kamal Kumar, who replaced I.D. Bhandari as the state police chief, said following the Delhi gang-rape case, there was a need for regular monitoring of crimes against women.

The officer, who belongs to the 1982 batch of the Indian Police Service and is set to retire in July, said curbing narcotics trade and facilitating tourists by streamlining traffic in popular tourist destinations of Shimla, Manali and Dharamsala would be among his priorities.
