Shimla: Establishing of a super specialty hospital at Tanda Medical College, Kangra with an expenditure of Rs 150 crore would provide a health pool of highly qualified professionals that would help in better health services to the state, said health minister Rajiv Bindal.
Talking to the media the minister said that in three years the government had been able to give fillip to medical education. While three upcoming new medical colleges would substantially increase the MBBS seats, our efforts have paid off by increasing post graduate seats from 39 to 70 at IGMC Shimla and have been able to start PG courses at Tanda Medical College, he said.
Funding for the super-specialty hospital was to be funded jointly by the state government and center, with the centre contributing Rs 125 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Surksha Yojna and the state paying up Rs 25 crore. Super specialties courses that would be offered were in the fields of cardiothoracic vascular surgery, oncology, cardiology, neurology, neurosurgery and nephrology.
The minister informed that construction work at the country’s first ESI hospital at Mandi was in an advanced stage and by December 2011, the institute’s infrastructure would be ready after incurring an expenditure of Rs 765 crore. Admissions to this and upcoming medical colleges at Palampur and Kasauli would start from the 2012 session, increasing the total undergraduate medical seats from 150 to 465.
The government had also issued letter of intent for establishing two more medical colleges at Hamirpur and Sirmaur, said the minister.
By approving 12 nursing colleges and starting B Technology courses in para-medical courses, the medical education department was not only opening new avenues for employment but would improve availability of supporting staff for medical institutions, said Bindal.
