New Delhi, May 7 (IANS) In a bid to curb protests around Parliament House, Delhi Police Tuesday put barricades on roads and streets leading up to it, causing traffic jams and inconvenience to thousands of commuters.
“Parliament is in session and to thwart protests in the sensitive area we have shut down the roads,” a police official told IANS.
For the last few days, Sikh protestors have been detained after foiled bids to march towards Parliament House and hold protests on roads leading to it against the acquittal of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar by a Delhi court in a case related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde had expressed his displeasure over police’s inability to contain the protests near Parliament House and also sought a report on the incident.
Taking no chances, police put up the barricades early Tuesday morning, resulting in huge traffic snarls.
Amit Singh, a banker residing in west Delhi, said: “Usually the time taken from my home to my office in Connaught Place is 20 minutes but today it took me an hour in the morning just to cover half of that distance.”
