Seth Shaffer might not be a household name everywhere, but he is certainly in the town of Dharamsala, India, home of the Dalai Lama and thousands of Tibetans-in-exile. The 25-year-old, who use to manage a music production company in New York City, now manages an American nonprofit organization called Harmony Through Education (HTE), which provides education to children who are left behind and economically incapable of attending school in Dharamsala and other parts of the world.
“After spending several months in Dharamsala teaching children with special needs, I realized the lack of formal education available to this population, not only in Dharamsala, but throughout India and the developing world” explained Seth Shaffer, Executive Director of Harmony Through Education. “We already have a waiting list at the Dharamsala School and are working hard to ensure we can accommodate of all the special needs students in the area in the near future.”
The school in Dharamsala opened on July 14 with 15 students and will emphasize teaching vocational and life skills, the press release said. His Holiness the Dalai Lama honored the school by naming it the “Illuminating Loving Kindness School.” HTE plans to serve the entire family and thus, requires parents and siblings to attend at least one monthly training session in order to educate them about issues like nutrition, hygiene and teaching skills. The team has hired teachers trained to teach special children, making it a worthy effort. The team at HTE plans to expand its vision with increasing number of students and help them make brighter futures for themselves.
One can also sponsor a child at the school at the monthly cost of $ 50.
