Journalist assaulted by congress lawmaker in Meghalaya assembly

Shillong: A photojournalist on Monday was assaulted by a Congress legislator inside the Meghalaya Assembly premises after he clicked pictures of the MLA sleeping during one of the ongoing sessions.

Walton Lyttan, a photojournalist was assaulted inside the Assembly premises by Founder Strong Cajee, the Congress MLA from Mawlai constituency, after Chief Minister Mukul Sangma presented the budget today. Lyttan was immediately rushed to the Shillong Civil Hospital for medical treatment.

Lyttan’s picture of a dozing Cajee was published last week in several vernacular newspapers, which infuriated the Congress legislator.

Meanwhile, the Leader of the Opposition from the NCP, Conrad Sangma condemning the attack said it was unfortunate that an elected representative behaved in such a manner.

“It is unbecoming for an elected representative to physically attack anyone and that too inside the Assembly. We strongly condemn the action of the Congress legislator and demand that the Speaker takes action,” Sangma said.
