Chandigarh : The Haryana government today decided to close down collection at 10 toll points across the state. The decision was taken at a meeting of the state cabinet here.
An official said the 10 toll points were being closed as the collection from them was less than Rs.50 lakh per annum. While two toll points will be shut down immediately, others will be closed by July next year.
“With the closure of these 10 toll points, people would be benefitted to the tune of Rs.2.50 crore per annum,” he said.
“The road users get irritated while paying toll and sometimes they quarrelled with the toll collector. The applying of brakes by vehicles at the toll plaza resulted in higher fuel consumption and emission of polluting gases. This was also resulting in wear and tear of the highway,” the official added.
He said that the amount would be compensated for by additional toll collection to the tune of Rs.29 crore being generated from recently started toll collection centres on five other roads.
