Chandigarh: Banking on a World Bank assisted Rs 750 Crore road project, the Punjab government has made it legally binding on contractors for upkeep of roads under a output and performance base contract.
Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Sing Badal said here that government had signed a Output and Performance Based Road Contract (OPRC) project with World Bank.
Under this project, contractors would be accountable for upkeep of roads, he said.
“The OPRC model provides for a time frame for carrying out repairs on damaged roads, otherwise the contractors lose a portion of their monthly payment dues, should the repairs not be carried out within a stipulated period,†said Badal.
Under the World Bank funded project six roads Sangrur-Sunam, Bhawanigarh-Sunam-Bhikhi-SH13, Intersection- Kotshamir,Barnala-Mansa, Mansa-Talwandi Sabo, Dhanaula-Bhikhi and Bathinda-Kotshamir-Talwandi Sabo had been selected.
Under OPRC system, road tenders floated by Punjab Public Works Department would incorporate the road maintenance clause that would bind the contractors to carrying out timely repairs, said Sukhbir.
The government had inked the project for ensuring best practices in road construction in the state, he added.
