Shimla: To the dismay of People for Animals, an NGO, the Himachal High Court did not stay the government’s decision about permitting farmers to kill monkeys, wild boars and neelgai’s (antelope’s) where they were causing damage to crops.
Division bench of Justice RB Mishra and Justice Sanjay Karol, which on Monday heard the plea about seeing a ban on killing of simians and other animals, adjourned the case for January 3 after hearing both sides.
Justifying its stance, the government had let the court know that the permission was granted within the provisions of the Wildlife Act and it had not violated the act.
With farmers having availed permits from wildlife wardens for shooting animals found damaging crops, and announced a statewide campaign for a cull from 10th December, Peoples of Animal approached the High Court seeking quashing of a November 3 notification that had permitted the farmers actions.
Holding that the state had allowed random killing of wild animals, the petitioner had argued that section 11 of the Wildlife Protect Act 1972 had been violated.
