Shimla: It is a great moment for Himachal as one of its young scientists, Dr. Pooja Sharma received the prestigious Power System Research Award at Power System Operation Corporation Limited (POSOCO) function, a subsidiary of Power Grid Corporation at IIT Delhi on 17th March 2015. Dr. Pooja Sharma was second in the list of top ten students invited to present their work and also receive the prestigious research award. The award consisted of a citation certificate and a cash prize of Rs. 60,000.
This award has been instituted by POSOCO as an initiative to recognize and reward the innovative technical research excellence in the field of power system by discovering and encouraging fresh Doctoral/Masters research accomplishments in the field. The award is a joint venture of Power System Operation Corporation (POSOCO), a subsidiary of Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (POWERGRID) and Foundation for Innovation & Technology Transfer (FITT), IIT, Delhi. The award was instituted with an aim to (a) Discover innovations in Power System (b) Reward excellence in the area of Power System & related fields (c) Motivate students to undertake further research & innovation in the power system (d) Collect and disseminate successful technologies for possible industry adoption.
Dr Pooja Sharma who has completed her PhD in the field of Electrical Engineering on Maximum power tracking from shaded photovoltaic modules in 2014 from IIT Bombay, was placed second in the overall merit list of the award indicating the level of innovativeness contribution of her research work to the field. The awardeeswere chosen by a panel of experts drawn from all over the country and they decided based on the contributions made by a PhD student towards the innovation in research, its application impact and improvement in the performance of various engineering systems.
Ms. Pooja Sharma, who hails from a non-decrepit village – Lajhiani, 3 km from Bhoranj tehsil of Hamirpur dist. has completed her B. Tech in Electrical Engineering from NIT Hamipur and M. Tech. from SLIET Longowal, Punjab. Subsequently, she joined for PhD in IIT Bombay and made significant contributions to the field of photovoltaic systems to efficiently generate electric power from solar energy. For her outstanding contributions in the field of electrical engineering, DrPooja Sharma was also awarded the ‘Excellence in PhD thesis award last year for best PhD thesis by IIT Bombay during the annual convocation.
Awards like POSOCO PhD thesis awardand Excellence in PhD thesis will motivate engineering students to pursue higher studies and carry out cutting edge research in the field to make India a progressive and self-sustainable country in the near future.
