Chandigarh: A fugitive policeman accused of three murders, including of a Chandigarh police inspector, was arrested today by Haryana Police from New Delhi, police said.
Constable Basant Kumar was arrested along with his woman accomplice Sarita.
Haryana’s Inspector General of Police Anil Kumar Rao confirmed the arrests.
Basant Kumar, under suspension from the Chandigarh Police, had killed a mother-son duo in Haryana’s Sonipat district April 18. He had been on the run ever since with Sarita, with whom he had an affair.
Basant Kumar had killed a 55-year-old woman, Roshni, and her son, Sandeep, 23, with his service weapon in Haryana’s Sonipat district in April and absconded with a newly-wed woman, Sarita.
Sarita had been married to Sandeep for just three days when the constable attacked and killed the mother-son duo.
Police officials said Basant Kumar was spotted early Saturday by Chandigarh police inspector Sucha Singh in Sector 17. On being questioned, Basant Kumar allegedly stabbed the inspector and his driver.
Sucha Singh succumbed to stab wounds at the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) here. The police driver was also injured in the attack.
The inspector’s killer and a woman with him drove away in the traffic interceptor vehicle in which the police officer was travelling. It was found abandoned near Dhanas village on the outskirts of Chandigarh.
