Himachal Pradesh University students reject new education system

Shimla: Students of Himachal Pradesh who have recently completed their plus two education are having to look for private professional courses, though many of them would like to pursue low cost graduation in government colleges but for the new Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) having been introduced in a hurry.

New (CBCS) credit based choice system introduced by Himachal Pradesh University from this academic session has caused confusion among both students and faculty members in most affiliated colleges. However, much of the confusion prevails among students seeking admission to the first year about choosing their major subject of study.

Students organisations say that in the city colleges, faculty members and students, are suffering from this system that has been introduced in a hurry without proper arrangement or information, only to obtain the Rs 100 crore grants promised for implementing the new credit based choice system.

Those who has scored less percentage in Plus two class are not getting seats in major subjects because of availability of less number of seats. Admission for major subjects is to be based on merit list. Such students are left with no choice but to join expensive professional courses in private institutions rather than be admitted under CBCS.

Professional courses like BBA and BCA in private insinuations have no criteria of percentages obatined.

HPU had decided to declare examination results of under graduate class within 45 days but even after 6 months of holding the examination, the university administration had failed to bring out the results.  A question mark rises as to  how the university would bring out results under the semester system.

Students’organization oppose RUSA

CBCS is being implemented under Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), an initiative of the union ministry of human resource and development (MHRD), where seats in major elective subjects have been restricted and are only to be filled on merit.

According to the new admission system a student will have to opt for a major subject and then colleges will display merit list. Each college can only admit 120 students in one major subject.

All the students’ organizations of Himachal Pradesh University have rejected RUSA.

Akhil Bhartiya Vidharthi Parshid (ABVP) national secretary Umesh Dutt said that Himachal Pradesh University has hurriedly implemented the semester system and CBCS in colleges only to obtain grants of Rs 100 crore under RUSA. The outfit has held statewide protest in colleges of HPU against the new semester system and credit based choice system (CBCS). ABVP has also warned of national wide protests from August.

Yadupati Thakur president of National student Union of Inida (NSUI) alleged that HPU had not considered the practical problems of students and implemented it without proper planning.

Student federation of Inida (SFI) was also not in favor of the new system. SFI activists said that firstly awareness among students and faculty about the new system should have been made before the scheme was implemented.
