You have to be calm on the field: Rohit Sharma

Mumbai, May 6 (IANS) Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma’s inspiring captaincy is also being reflected in his batting in the sixth edition of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL).

Rohit, who has found a place in the 15-member squad for the Champions Trophy, has been one of the most prolific scorers in the IPL and the additional burden of captaincy had no bearing on his batting.

“It’s a very good start that I have got. Out of five games I have won four and lost one. I would take that result as a captain. But I am not going to relax. We still need to play good cricket for the next five games and get to the Play-Offs comfortably,” Rohit told IPLT20.com.

Rohit said he prefers to keep things simple while leading Mumbai Indians.

“I try not to over-think and keep it simple. I’ve realised that you’ve got to be calm on the field, to be able to take the right decisions. As a captain you don’t get much time in this format. You have to be quick in shuffling your plans and rotating your bowlers, at the same time, give your players the space they want,” he said.

Rohit said as a captain he has to be calm and that also helps him while batting.

“As captain I have an additional responsibility to lead from the front with the bat and I have to be calm. Having said that, I try not to put pressure on myself thinking I have too much on my plate. I just want to keep enjoying myself in both aspects of my responsibility and ensure that Mumbai Indians do well,” he said.

Rohit said the win over Mumbai Indians’ fierce rival Super Kings here Sunday night was the best in his career.

“This was a big game for us and we really wanted to win it. But before the game we discussed that we need to be relaxed and not think of it as a big game. We knew that if we stayed cool, expressed ourselves and played to our potential, we would win easily. ThatÂ’s what happened. Chennai Super Kings have been playing extremely consistent cricket since the first season and itÂ’s always a challenge to play them. They do bring out the best in us and itÂ’s always very sweet to beat them,” he said.
