Moral policing in Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad, May 14 (IANS) In a bizarre incident of moral policing here, a girl was nabbed from a park here for drinking alcohol and was thrashed in a police station by a male officer, sources said Tuesday.

She was pulled by her hair, repeatedly slapped by a male police officer Monday and booked to cover up police excesses when the incident came to light, they said.

The incident took place at 10 p.m. Monday in Sahibabad police station of Ghaziabad.

The Sahibabad police received an information that a man and a woman were drinking liquor in their Indica car near a park at Vikram Enclave in Sahibabad.

The police went and took the couple into custody and brought them at the Sahibabad police station.

In the meantime, a woman came from the public there and pulled the woman by her hairs in the police station. When she defended herself, the police Sub Inspector Iftakar Quereshi came forward and slapped her repeatedly.

The woman from the public also instigated other men to beat her. The public woman beat her in presence of the police officials.

The woman who was taken into custody is the resident of DLF Colony while the man is from Dilshad Garden. He is the son of a senior officer in the government of Delhi.

The Inspector General of Police (IG) Meerut Zone Bhavesh Kumar said: “I had not enough time but I am looking into the whole matter that had come to my knowledge through television news.”
