Mumbai, April 4 (IANS) A 20-year-old man has become the hero of his housing society for saving a four-year-old girl who was stuck in the window of her sixth-floor apartment in Mumbai’s Goregaon suburb.
Nikhil Ugle, however, said that maybe his dream to become a stuntman made him undertake the daredevil act of scaling the building from outside, holding onto pipes and resting on ledges to save the little girl.
“I used to tell my friends that I want to become a stuntman. However, I did not make any specific effort to take it forward and it remained in my subconscious. Maybe it was just an act of the subconscious,” Ugle told IANS.
“On the other hand, I want to take up a career as a chartered account and I am working towards achieving that after I finish my commerce graduation,” he added.
Richi Rele got stuck in the window grilles at her sixth-floor house Tuesday. Her mother Pallavi, who had got her by the hand, kept screaming for help.
Even as neighbours gathered outside her apartment and on the ground floor of the building, Pallavi was scared to the core. She could not let go of her daughter’s hand to unlock her apartment door to let anyone inside to help.
Meanwhile, Ugle had just returned from college and used his courage and presence of mind to scale the building from outside.
“He climbed to the six floors of the building holding onto pipes and resting on ledges. He then held Richi and hoisted her further upwards so that her mother can reach out better and pull her up, freeing her from the grille,” Ugle’s father Somnath told IANS.
In the meantime, the neighbours had called the fire brigade which then helped Nikhil to climb down safely.
Somnath works as a constable at the Amboli police station in suburban Andheri in northwest Mumbai.
He said he had no idea his son would undertake such a daring act. “I had no idea he would do something like this. Although my family was worried about Nikhil’s safety and I was away on duty, I can say my son has made me proud,” he said.
When asked if he would want his son to join the police force, Somnath said he would leave the decision on his son.
Nikhil, who used to climb trees whenever he visited his village, said that was the only exercise he had undertaken in climbing before attempting the rescue.
