Five-year-old Delhi rape survivor recovering

New Delhi, April 23 (IANS) The five-year-old Delhi rape survivor is recovering, doctors said Tuesday while the second accused in the case was sent to four days of police custody as protests demanding the resignation of Delhi Police chief continued in the national capital.

“The girl is recovering as expected. Her fever has come down. She is afebrile (not feverish) now,” said D.K. Sharma, medical superintendent of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

“She is active and taking adequate liquids and semi-solid food. She has had good breakfast,” he said adding that her “colostomy is functioning normally”.

It could take approximately two weeks for the girl to be discharged, the doctor said, adding that they were trying their best to ensure that the girl is able to lead a normal life.

The second accused in the case, Pradeep, was sent to four days of police custody by a Delhi court here.

Additional Sessions Judge Sanjay Garg also issued a warrant against prime accused Manoj Kumar, directing Tihar Jail authorities to present him before the court Wednesday as police had sought the warrant against Manoj to confront him with co-accused Pradeep.

Pradeep was arrested Monday from Bihar’s Lakhisarai district where he was hiding at his maternal uncle’s house.

Manoj had also admitted that on the day of the incident, the two had been drinking and struck up the idea of finding a girl. When they came out of the room, they saw the five-year-old playing, according to police.

Manoj was held Saturday from his in-laws’ house in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district.

The east Delhi girl was reported missing April 15 from Gandhi Nagar. She was found April 17 after her mother heard cries for help from a locked room in their own building.

Meanwhile, protests continued in the national capital, as activists demanded the resignation of Delhi’s Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar and sought better safety for women.

Demonstrations were staged outside the police headquarters in central Delhi, All Indian Institute of Medical Sciences in south Delhi, where the girl is undergoing treatment, and at Jantar Mantar, where a group of protesters has been holding vigil since the Dec 16, 2012 gang-rape of a 23-year-old woman in a bus.
