Shimla: Justice Deepak Gupta, a senior judge of the High Court here, has been elevated as the first Chief Justice of the newly established Tripura High Court. He happens to be the first judge from Himachal to have been directly appointed as chief justice of another state.
Some of the important orders passed by Justice Gupta, who headed the Green Bench including ban of non-biodegradable packing for junk food, regulating of prices of essential drugs, installation of GPS systems in commercial vehicles and installation of electronic barriers on major entry points of the state.
In a landmark judgement, the bench headed by him had imposed a cost of Rs 100 crore on a cement company for violation of environmental laws and ordered dismantling of thermal plant that the company had set up without authorization.
Born into a family of lawyers on May 7, 1955 at Nurpur in Kangra district, Justice Gupta started practice at Himachal High Court in 1978 and was appointed a judge on October 4, 2004.
