Shimla: Rivers and their tributaries in Himachal Pradesh have been in spate as the state has witnessed moderate to heavy rainfall for almost a week, while two people were killed in Chamba district today due to landslides, officials said.
“Continuous rainfall has abnormally increased the water level in the Satluj river and its tributaries. An alert has been sounded in the villages and towns located along the river in Shimla and Kinnaur districts,” a government spokesperson told.
Likewise, the water level of the Beas in Kullu district has also increased. The water level of the river has increased so much that at some places the river is touching the Chandigarh-Manali National Highway 21.
The incessant rains have also caused massive landslides on the National Highways 21 and 22 in Shimla, Kinnaur, Mandi and Kullu districts, hampering vehicular traffic.
In Chamba town, a one-and-half-year old child died while two others were injured Tuesday when the boundary wall of the zonal hospital caved in due to heavy rains.
One person died in Kuher village of the Baloth panchayat in Chamba district Monday after a house collapsed.
Meanwhile, the pilgrims bound for the Manimahesh lake in the interiors of Chamba district remained stranded for hours as vehicular traffic on the Chamba-Bharmour road was suspended due to landslides.
