Shimla: One body was recovered and seven others were missing, when a sudden rise in water flow in a feeder stream (Nalah) washed away a vehicle that was crossing it at Haripur Khaul near Poanta Sahib in Sirmaur district on today morning.
Superintendent police of Sirmaur, Rameshwar Thakur over phone let Hill Post know that the accident occurred when four vehicles of a marriage party, despite being warned by workers near the site, attempted to cross the stream when it was in spate at about 10 a.m.
The leading vehicle got stuck in the middle and the others were queued up behind, when the water flow increased suddenly washing away the first vehicle with all the 8 passengers, which included the driver, in it.
Immediate rescue measures helped to save the about 15 passengers trapped in the other three vehicles.
Body of one of the missing persons, identified as Hasan Singh, was recovered about 15 Kms downstream in Yamunanagar district of Haryana.
Search parties are on the lookout for the other missing persons but chances of having survived the torrent and flash flood are bleak.
