Heavy snowfall blocks Srinagar-Jammu highway again

Srinagar : Heavy snowfall Monday lashed the Kashmir Valley, blocking the Srinagar-Jammu highway, an official said.

“Two feet deep snow has accumulated on the road in Banihal sector. Although snow clearance operation was started at 5.30 a.m., the highway has been closed to ensure safety of passengers and vehicles”, Brigadier T.P.S. Rawat, chief engineer of Border Roads Organization (BRO), said here.

Snowfall started in Srinagar and other places in the valley Monday morning.

“While heavy snowfall is expected in the higher reaches, there would be moderate snowfall in the plains. The same weather conditions are likely to continue Tuesday. The weather would show signs of improvement from Tuesday afternoon onwards,” Sonam Lotus, director of the local MET office, said.

Following poor visibility due to heavy snowfall, no airline could operate any flight to or from the Srinagar international airport.
