With two operating medical colleges, 7 new medical colleges approved, the government has floated an expression of interest for setting up three new medical institutions in Solan, Mandi and Chamba districts.
The director medical education has invited proposals for three new medical college to be set up in the private sector.
“A company, a trust or a society with an aim of promoting medical education could apply for establishing a Greenfield project either at Baddi in Solan district or at Sarkhaghat in Mandi district or in Mandi district,†the director stated through a public notice.
Whereas the government had solicited proposals for private Greenfield medical college at Sarkaghat and Chamba earlier also but there were no takers. The proposal for establishing a medical college at Baddi is a new one.
Besides the proposal to establish the three new institutions, at least three medical colleges are in advanced stage of construction and are likely to start admission by the 2012 session.
The colleges in advanced stages of construction are the ESI Medical College at Mandi, the Maharshi Markandeshwar University medical college at Kumarhatti in Solan district and the super specialty medical college at Palampur being established by a Jaypee Trust in collaboration with Vivekanand Medical Research Trust, Palampur.
Letters of intent (LOI) have been issued to Maa Sarswati Educational Trust, Kala Amb for establishing a medical college at Kala Amb in Sirmaur district; Vocational Education Foundation, New Delhi for starting a medical college at Hamirpur; Amruth ANS Education Social Trust Ashram, New Delhi for establishing a medical college in Una; and Swift Fundamental Research and Educational Society, Chandigarh, entrusted with a proposal for establishing another medical college in Una.
In the state two medical colleges in the government sector IGMC Shimla and Tanda Medical College, Kangra have recognition from Medical Council of India (MCI) and are admitting 200 MBBS students each year.
Between them the government medical colleges are also offering MD/MS courses in several specialist fields.

Well why are we forgetting that Government has failed to open medical/Dental college for so many years and suddenly they come with so many proposals.
And the big question is that do we want to go the way medical facilities are availed in Punjab that will be very grave situation of Himachali’s as we don;t have NRI’s pocket full of dollars in UK or Canada. So Government should have made more investment into Medical/Dental facilities as it is core sector and hight priority area.
