Himachal government nod for medical colleges in Sirmaur, Hamirpur

Shimla: For establishing two more medical colleges in Hamirpur and Sirmaur district, the Himachal government today approved the proposals by deciding to issue letter of intents (LOI) for the new health institutions.

Health minister Rajiv Bindal disclosed to My Himachal News that LOI had been sent to Maa Sarswati Educational Trust, Kala Amb for establishing a medical college at Kala Amb in Sirmaur district and another one had been issued to Vocational Education Foundation, New Delhi for starting a medical college at Hamirpur.

“With approval of these two medical colleges, 7 new medical colleges in private and public sector would come up in the next few years,” said Bindal.

Though the proposed Hamirpur medical college had been earlier approved to another party, but since no progress had been made on it for the past two years, the allottee had decided to surrender the land marked for the institution, said the minister.

In all the government had sought expression of interest for four medical colleges, however, there were no takers for setting up these health institutions at Sarkaghat in Mandi and in Chamba, sources in the health department disclosed.

Bindal said that work on construction of Maharshi Markandeshwar University medical college in Solan and the ESI Medical College at Mandi was in an advanced stage and admissions could begin by as early as 2011 session.

Construction work for the super specialty medical college at Palampur being established by a Jaypee Trust in collaboration with Vivekanand Medical Research Trust, Palampur was steadily progressing, while the Amruth ANS Education Social Trust Ashram, New Delhi had acquired 30 acres of land for establishing a medical college in Una.

Swift Fundamental Research and Educational Society, Chandigarh, entrusted with the proposal of establishing another medical college in Una, was still acquire land for the institution, said the minister.
