Shimla: For the increasing number of inmates in state jails, the government would be setting up another jail in Chamba which has a budget outlay of Rs 3 crore, chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal stated here.
Speaking on the occasion of launching video conferencing in courts and jails at model central jail Kanda, Dhumal said that besides the funds for a new jail building in Chamba, Rs 38.68 lakh had been earmarked for repairs of other jail buildings in the state.
Role of prisons in society have undergone a sea change from being centers of retribution and deterrence to one of correction and rehabilitation, said Dhumal. The government was making sustained efforts to streamline jail administration, he added.
Setting up video conferencing in courts and jails was a government initiative to save time and money and ensure early disposal of cases, said the chief minister.
Chief Justice of HP High Court, Justice Kurian Joseph, who was present on the occasion said the the pace of deciding pending cases would be accelerated.
