Shimla: Taking umbrage to a central move about keeping union territory Chandigarh out of the administrative purview of Punjab Governor, Akali Dal after its deliberation Vichar Baithak meet said the chief minister Prakash Singh Badal would take up the matter with the union government.
Briefing media persons after the conclusion of its two day party meet, deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal said that the rightful claim on Chandigarh was that of Punjab and any move to delink the Punjab Governor for being the administrator of the union territory would be opposed.
The chief minister would take up the issue with the central government, he said.
Till the mid-1980’s, the city state used to administered by a chief commissioner, who directly reported to the home ministry.
Rise of militancy had forced about a change in the system and the Punjab Governor was given the additional charge of administering over Chandigarh, so that efforts in tackling militancy could be coordinated.
The central government has indicated of reverting back to the old system that prevailed before the militancy period and have a chief commissioner, who was assisted by an advisory board, to administer the union territory of Chandigarh.
