Himachal Pradesh University violence leads to suspension of SHO

Shimla: After the highly charged drama that followed this week on the premises of Himachal Pradesh University, finally, the inquiry ordered by district magistrate JS Rana has held suspended SHO Amar Singh for using ‘undue force against the hostel boys without having obtained permission from the authorities’.
The SP, Shimla said that a case of rioting illegal trespass with intention to cause harm and prevention of damage to public property has been made out against the suspended police official. Another police inquiry to identify those who assisted Amar Singh in carrying out the beating has been instated.

However, the congress party has been defending the suspended SHO stating that a law enforcing officer should not be reprimanded for doing his job rather the guilty should be punished. Meanwhile, the Student Federation of India (SFI) has complained of harassment and false cases against their members by the local police.

Anchal Guleria, secretary of the student’s council association (SCA) and also a SFI member told the media that they would soon file a memorandum to the government through the deputy commissioner stating the harassment by the district police. It was after the beating of AVBP students on Saturday when the police arrested 4 SFI students on charges of being involved in the earlier group clashes with AVBP. Guleria also objected to the reinstatement of 3 faculty members stating it as a wrong trend followed by the university.
