Mumbai, July 2 (IANS) Mumbai’s share in generating new jobs sharply plummeted while Delhi-NCR has catapulted to the top slot, an industry survey has revealed.
New jobs generation in the country’s commercial capital fell sharply by 28 percent during the first quarter of fiscal 2013-14 against the corresponding period last year, said ‘Job Trends Across Cities & Sector’, a study conducted by the Associated Chambers of Commerce & Industry (Assocham) released here Tuesday.
“Mumbai’s share in generating total number of new jobs across India fell from over 14 percent last year to just around 10 percent,” Assocham secretary general D.S. Rawat said while releasing the study.
In contrast, Delhi-NCR remained numero uno in new job generation with a maximum share of over 27 percent as compared to other cities, Rawat said.
Referring to Mumbai, the study said that around 13,100 new jobs were generated here compared to 18,00 in Q1 last year, mostly in the IT, IT-enabled services (ITes) and hardware which accounted for 32 percent with banking, financial services, insurance (BFSI – 18 percent), academics (seven), advertising and event management (five), telecom and other manufacturing (four) and hospitality (three percent).
Sectors like engineering and construction, realty, automobiles, retail, infrastructure, human resources, FMCG and and others notched an insignificant increase in new jobs generation, it added.
According to Rawat, a total over 125,500 new jobs were generated in the country during Q1 of the current fiscal, which is a decline of two percent – or 127,700 new jobs created during the same period last year.
Nationwide, IT, ITeS and hardware together accounted for 39 percent of all the new jobs, following by BFSI with 14 percent, and academics at 11 percent.
Ironically, the IT and academics capital of Maharashtra – Pune, also witnessed a fall of 17 percent, according to the study.
IT-ITeS and hardware accounted for nearly 50 percent of the 8,500 new jobs in the current fiscal Q1, BFSI with 12 percent, academics at seven percent and other sectors remaining sluggish. Last year, Pune had notched 10,200 new jobs.
Among other important cities, Kolkata notched an increase of 19 percent while Bangalore recorded seven percent increase in new jobs creation.
Chennai also took a blow of over 21 percent – from 10,200 jobs last year to just around 8,000 this year, while Hyderabad has also been affected with a dip of five percent in the year-on-year growth of new jobs.
Among the Tier 2 cities, Lucknow notched an impressive 58 percent growth, Kanpur (53 percent), Kochi (45), Nagpur (27), Gandhinagar (17) and Jaipur (16).
But, other Tier 2 cities like Surat fell by 38 percent, Indore (23) and Bhopal (12) in new jobs creation.
In Tier 3 cities, Bhubaneshwar surged ahead with 37 percent increase, Raipur (32), Meerut (21) and Ranchi (10).
Other Tier 3 cities like Guwahati fell by 48 percent, Vadodara (37), Patna (29) and Amritsar (21), the Assocham study revealed.
“Overall, these numbers portray a dull job market owing to on-going global economic slowdown. Though the hiring trend activity has put up a dismal show during the first quarter of the current financial year, the industry is hopeful that job market will pick up second quarter onwards,” Rawat said.
Assocham tracked the data on a daily basis for vacancies posted by over 3,000 companies on various job portals, advertisements in job supplements of national and regional dailies and news journals for 56 cities and 32 sectors offering employment opportunities across India.
