1000 Himachal buses to get GPS, 19 bus stations to be modernized

Shimla: Himachal Roadways Transport Corporation (HRTC) is ready to install GPS systems in its buses. In the first phase, 1000 buses will get Global Positioning Systems (GPS) installed. Moreover, Vehicle Tracking System (VTS) will be installed in these buses under the centrally sponsored Intelligent Transport System (ITS) project.

At the same time, 19 LCD Monitors will be installed at 19 different bus stations across the state. Leasing and Financial Services Limited has been given the contract of installing these LCDs under this program. The ground survey work has already been done and the company is currently working on installing the LCD screens at the selected bus stations.

In the first stage, 1000 long route buses get VTS installed.

The company is given a five month deadline to complete VTS installation across the state. Overall cost of the VTS project is estimated at 6.9 Crore rupees. In the second stage, 900 buses and eight bus stations will be connected to central GPS systems.

Passenger Information Systems will be installed at these bus stations so that passengers as well as the authorities can check the status of a moving on a given route. Himachal often witnesses road accidents and of the reasons behind these accidents is lack of a monitoring system. The PIS and VTS systems can help to keep a check on these accidents, if implemented properly.

Speed of the bus, arrival and departure timings, and other related information would be available to passengers at the bus stations.

It would be easy to monitor moving buses once this system starts functioning.
