NAHAN: Residents of Nahan town were facing acute water crises for the past four days due to breakage in the Khri and Nehar Sawar water supply lines.
According to officials of Irrigation and Public Health Department, pipeline of Kheri lift water supply has been damaged by the heavy land slides triggered on the Laya Devi hills due to cloud burst early this week. The pipe line of Nehar Sawar flow drinking water supply scheme was also broke due to heavy rain at a place known as Biji Dhar near Nehar Sawar.
Sources said that the pipe line damaged at Biji Dhar was repaired but nearly 200 meters pipeline of Kheri scheme has been washed away at Laya Devi Hills which was taking time to be repaired. The area is full of silt and it was difficult even to cross from that track. Although work on the site was in plrogress but it may take more than a week to restore the pumping of Kheri lift water supply scheme to this town.
It may be recalled that pipes at Laya Devi Hills got damaged almost every year but department could not find out some permanent solution of this problem due to geographical condition of the area. Despite spending crores of rupees on the Kheri lift water scheme, Nahan town was getting only one time water supply and that too irregular and for few minutes due to shortage of water, allege Nahan Nagrik Sabha.
Department has pressed water tankers in some areas, people were fetching drinking water from hand pumps, other water bodies around Nahan and even from Markanda river which is at a distance of 7 K.M. from Nahan.
A deputation of Nagrik Sabha headed by its president Mr. Digvijay Gupta yesterday met Deputy Commissioner Sirmour and Superintending Engineer Irrigation and Public Health department Sirmour and demanded to resolve on going water crises of Nahan. They charged that some localities were not getting drinking water for the past five days. The deputation demanded to press a large number of water tankers in to the work to provide water in every locality and also find out permanent solution of this ‘permanent problem’ of this town.
