One crushed in train accident in Himachal

Shimla: A twenty year old young man died after being crushed between a tunnel wall and the moving train on Sunday morning, which he had boarded from Shimla for a journey home to Saharanpur town in Uttar Pradesh.

Railway police officer Ranbir Singh said that Mohammed Moshin son of Mehmood Yakub, who used to work as a fruit vendor in the city, died in the accident.

While the train was passing through tunnel number 91, near Tara Devi, the young man felt claustrophobic and made his way to the boggie door to catch some fresh air, said the investigating officer.

“In the process he slipped and was crushed. The victim’s body has been handed over to the relatives,” he said.

There were over 30 people travelling in the train when the accident occurred. After a brief halt, the train resumed its journey.

In a separate incident, in the evening, an old lady died while trying to reach the railway station.

The old lady was accompanied by her grandson and was to board a train out from Shimla but she collapsed on the way near the railway station and was declared as dead. The body has been sent for a post-mortem, the railway traffic police informed.

Northern railways runs five trains daily between Kalka – Shimla, a track that is over a hundred years old and has been award a heritage track status by UNESCO.

To cope up with the summer rush, special holiday trains are plying on the 30 inch gauge track and would be run till middle of July.

Built in 1905, the train starts at 640 meters altitude from Kalka and after passing through 102 tunnels terminates at Shimla at an altitude of 2060 meters.
