Shimla: A bus that was going from Rampur to Reckong Peo, the district headquarters of Kinnaur, met with an accidents a little while ago at Natpha, near the dam site of the mega 1500 MW Natpha Jhakri project.
Many people have been injured and some passengers having died in the accident. Initial reports put the number of dead at 15.
A Himachal Pradesh government press release quoting the deputy commissioner of Kinnaur, Naresh Kumar Lath stated that as many as 18 people had died on accident spot.
The injured, about 15 of them have been shifted to Bhawanagar and Rampur hospital.
The bus (HP – 63 – 2051) is believed to be that of a private operator ‘Friends Coach’. The accident occurred at about 4 p.m.
The driver lost control while driving on the highway to Kinnaur and the bus tumbled into the valley and landed on a lower road that leads to the dam site, eyewitnesses said.
One media report said that the accident was caused by the driver trying to speed past another bus, when he lost control and the vehicle veered off the road.
The impact of the bus fall was so severe that the wreckage of the bus was just a mangled and crushed body of steel.
