Environmental Hazard

Shimla: A mighty, tall, gracious, over 100 years old GREEN Deodar (Cedar) tree in Sector-4 of New Shimla lies felled to the ground today.

Perhaps the tree was an environmental hazard to the nearby buildings.

As per the forest clearance norms applicable for new building plans, no construction can be done within 5 meters of a tree. It may even be someone’s private land, the law states so.

A mighty Deodar tree felled to make way for letting out commercial property in New Shimla

But the built up hops visible at the site seen in the background have been constructed within one meter of the tree, now felled. No questions were asked, no objections were raised. To make way for the shops and the nearby buildings, the voiceless but proud Deodar tree now lies felled mercilessly.

Not just the nearby residents, but even the pedestrians who pass by, do so by lamenting the felling of the mighty cedar tree.

The building owner, perhaps, will now be able to rent or sell the shops.
