Shimla: After an extensive search with help of an international recruitment consultancy, the Board of Governors of Bishop Cotton School, Shimla (BCS) has appointed Mr Simon Weale, MA (Oxon) as Director of the over 160 year old school. He succeeds Mr Roy Robinson who retired after fifteen years as Headmaster.
Reverend Dr. P.K. Samantaroy, Bishop CNI Diocese of Amritsar and Chairman of the BCS Board of Governors, said; “At BCS we must maintain our incredible track record of producing young men who will make a positive difference to both India and the rest of the world.”
The famous Heritage school was founded over 160 years ago in 1859 by the then Bishop of Calcutta (Bishop George Edwards Lynch Cotton) in the beautiful hill station of Shimla. It is believed to be the first boys’ boarding school in India, and also across Asia. Bishop Cotton School, Shimla has played a big part in shaping the development of public schools and education in India and has produced a host of well-known and successful alumni.
Mr Weale began his career as a history teacher. He has subsequently worked in some of the UK’s finest schools in a career spanning thirty years. His last post was as Headmaster of Shebbear College, Devon. Born and brought up in London, Mr Weale studied Modern History at Oxford University where he was a contemporary of UK Prime Ministers Boris Johnson and David Cameron. Mr Weale has three children and will be joined at the school by his wife Rebecca.
Mr Weale said; “I am privileged to be taking up this position at such a prestigious school. I have worked in several of the top independent schools in the UK and I have significant experience of raising academic standards within those schools and helping students to achieve places in world class universities both in the UK and abroad. Those schools all had extensive numbers of international students and they underlined to me how similar young people are and how connected they are with their peers around the world. My role is to strengthen the global outlook of Bishop Cotton School, Shimla and to maintain its reputation for excellence in every aspect of its provision.”
