Shimla: A hard fought match between APG A Stars and Jung Sports teams ended in a 1-1 draw and it was only a penalty shootout that saw through the APG team winning the finals with a 5-4 score over their rivals.
In the semi-finals APG Stars beat Bishop Cotton School by 3-1 and Junga Sports beat Magicians by 4-1.
Spread over four days, the Shimla Monsoon Cup 2016 had 18 teams participating and more than 60 matches were played at the Bishop Cotton School grounds venue.
Chief guest Arjit Sen Thakur, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, at the prize distribution ceremony said “sporting events not only give opportunity to young players to test their playing abilities but they also help in spreading awareness as well as in curbing drug abuse. We need to divert the youth towards more activities like this football cup tournament.”
Prithvi Vikram Sen, president of Shimla District Football Association that organised the cup said, “this football tournament is a platform for players to represent Himachal at State Level tournaments. Our players from the last tournament did represent the state for the n Santosh Trophy championship.”
The participants for this year’s Monsoon Cup were Bishop Cotton School, St. Edwards School, Shimla All Stars, Junga Sports Association, Highlanders, Summerhill United Football Club (Team A & Team B), Barca United (Rohru), Black Pearls (Rampur), Hainault Public School, Magicians FC , A Stars(APG University),APG SAARC(APG University),Central School for Tibetans and Boileauganj Football Club and Dayanand Public School.
