Fresh snow atop the 3400 meter high Rohtang Pass on Monday had over 200 people stranded as the strategic highway to Lahaul – Leh got blocked. An avalanche in the notorious Rahninala only added to the problems of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), who are tasked with clearing snow on this important road and maintaining it. The fresh snow reported ranged from 15 cms at lower levels to 56 cms at the pass top.
Intermittent snowfall and an overcast sky had permitted movement of only 55 vehicles from Koksar to Rohtang on Sunday. The avalanche and fresh snow on Monday has blocked all movements on this route.
The BRO got down to a rescue operation immediately and efforts were on to rescue the stranded vehicles.
Higher reaches of Kinnaur too experienced fresh snow,.
