Moily asks oil sector companies to support sportspersons

New Delhi, July 2 (IANS) Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister M. Veerappa Moily has asked the oil sector companies to support sportspersons and play a larger role in creating infrastructure.

While giving away the Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) awards here Monday night, Moily said that oil sector should come forward and play a larger role in supporting sports in the near future.

Moily also stressed that petroleum companies could do what world soccer FIFA does by conducting a talent search through the entire nation and pick up the potential from within. Moily believes that India has no dearth of sporting talent.

At the 10th PSPB Awards ceremony, 150 outstanding sportspersons were honored. Cash awards worth about Rs.2.4 crore for three years 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12 were presented to the sportspersons.

Among those honored were current and former national champions and internationals in various sports like badminton, billiards and snooker, chess, cricket, golf, hockey, snooker, shooting, tennis, table tennis, volleyball and basketball.

Awards were also given to Jwala Gutta, P.Kashyap, K.Sasikiran, Koneru Humpy, Praveen Kumar, Cheteshwar Pujara, Munaf Patel, Vishnu Vardhan, V.Ragunath and Joby Mathew for getting Arjuna Award.
