Youth Congress workers cane-charged in Chandigarh

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Police used tear-gas and water cannons and cane-charged scores of Punjab Youth Congress (PYC) leaders and workers who were proceeding towards the residence of Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.

Scores of PYC leaders and workers were detained by police and let off later.

The youth Congress held the protest against the alleged inaction of the Punjab government in the recent murder of Congress leader Sukhraj Singh in Patti town, 270 km from here.

PYC president Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary alleged that those behind the murder of the Congress leader were being shielded at the behest of Punjab Food and Supplies Minister Adesh Partap Singh Kairon, who is the son-in-law of the chief minister.

Chaudhary said law and order situation in Punjab had collapsed and goons of the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal were involved in criminal activities.
