Traditional weaves from MP, Rajasthan wow Kolkata

Kolkata, June 20 (IANS) Intricate weaves and wefts of traditional fabrics from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan can be part of the fashionista’s wardrobe, thanks to an exhibition in the city that brings together light and airy clothes to get through the oppressive summer.

Culled from the landmark craftsmanship in the fort regions of Maheshwari and Chanderi in Madhya Pradesh and Kota in Rajasthan, the collection titled ‘Lal Sinderi Ashrafi Shankarpara’, showcases the fine threadwork of the ‘Lal Sinderi’ red saris from Maheshwar, gold coin ‘Ashrafi’ motifs of the Mughal era Chanderi saris and the Shankarpara diamond patches of Kota.

An exquisite assemblage of saris, unstitched fabrics and dupattas in colours that are very much in this season-pale gold, yellow, lemon green and fuchsia, the USP of the exquisite assembly lies in the fabrics’ gossamer nature and it’s breathability.

“The fabrics in pure cotton and cotton-silk blend are apt for the summer as they are light, airy and very summery,” SreeDutta Roy Sarkar of Weavers Studio, the organisers of the exhibition, told IANS.

Floral and geometrical motifs inset in the bright tones of the fabrics are sure to wow fans of sari.

The display at the studio in Kolkata’s southern area of Ballygunge is on till Saturday.
