New Delhi, June 9 (IANS) The future of Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be discussed at length when the working committee of the Indian cricket board meets here Monday.
Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra will also be widely discussed in the meeting.
Kundra faces suspension from his IPL franchise in the wake of Delhi Police claims that the NRI businessman placed regular bets during the Twenty20 tournament.
The revelation led the crisis-ridden Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to call its working committee meeting which will begin at the Taj Palace hotel 11 a.m. Monday.
The board, however, is unlikely to take any action against Kundra until its probe panel puts out a report. The fact that Delhi Police have not arrested him yet is likely to work in his favour at the emergency meet called by BCCI interim president Jagmohan Dalmiya.
Rajasthan Royals, who were already in the spotlight with the arrest of their three cricketers on spot-fixing charges, have made it clear that Kundra will have to forfeit his shares if he is proved guilty.
“Raj Kundra is a minority (11.7 percent) shareholder, and he has no involvement in the running of the franchise. We believe that Raj Kundra is a law abiding citizen and would not act contrary to law,” Rajasthan Royals chairman Ranjit Barthakur and CEO Raghu Iyer said in a statement earlier.
“If however, he is proven guilty, or has breached any regulations, he will be suspended, and he will also forfeit his shares. This is a strict governance procedure agreed to by all Rajasthan Royals shareholders, and it is consistent with our zero tolerance approach.”
The other major talking point at the BCCI meeting will of course be about Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals and their role in the spot fixing scandal.
BCCI president N. Srinivsan had to “step aside” following his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan’s arrest by Mumbai police May 24. He is out on bail now.
The scam was unearthed during IPL-6 with the arrest of Royals’ S. Sreesanh, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan.
