Penarol coach confirms resignation

Montevideo, June 11 (IANS) Uruguayan champions Penarol coach Jorge Da Silva has confirmed his resignation.

During a meeting last Sunday with club president Juan Pedro Damiani and the board of directors, Da Silva confirmed the announcement he made to the players Thursday that he was stepping down, reports Xinhua.

On a television show Sunday, Da Silva admitted being coach had caused him some sleepless nights and loss of appetite.

Coaching the team “wears you out”, said Da Silva, adding “sometimes you don’t eat or sleep”.

“It wears you out, because you spend a lot of energy on the club and neglect other important things,” Da Silva said on TV.

Under Da Silva’s leadership, Penarol won its 47th championship last week after defeating Defensor 3-1.

Da Silva’s contract runs until December, but according to media reports, the coach refused an offer to extend it.

His low point as coach of the team, said Da Silva, came at the 2013 Libertadores Cup, when Penarol were eliminated in the group phase.

Da Silva took over Penarol in March 2012 and has also coached teams including Godoy Cruz from Argentina, Al-Nassr from Saudi Arabia, Uruguay’s Defensor Sporting and Uruguay’s under-20 national team.
