Newly-wed cricketer Ankeet Chavan returns to jail, seeks bail

New Delhi, June 6 (IANS) Rajasthan Royals cricketer Ankeet Chavan, arrested in the Indian Premier League (IPL) spot fixing scandal, Thursday surrendered before a Delhi court after his June 2 marriage and was sent to judicial custody till June 18.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Lokesh Kumar Sharma sent Chavan to judicial custody till June 18, after he surrendered on the expiry of his one-week interim bail.

Chavan was earlier granted interim bail by a Delhi court till June 6 for his marriage in Mumbai and was told to surrender after the wedding.

The court said: “Since the investigation agency does not require his custody anymore, he is taken into judicial custody and remanded till June 18.”

Chavan, who has been booked under the stringent MCOCA with others, also moved a fresh bail application before a sessions court. It will come up for hearing Friday with the bail pleas of S. Sreesanth and 15 others.

Delhi Police have invoked the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against the cricketers.

Chavan and his teammates Sreesanth and Ajit Chandila were arrested in Mumbai by Delhi Police last month for their alleged involvement in spot fixing in matches for payments up to Rs.60 lakh for giving away pre-determined number of runs in an over.
