Maputo (Mozambique), June 11 (IANS) The Mozambique Football Federation is meeting this week to discuss the future of the German coach Gert Engels who announced his intent to resign following the national team’s poor performance in the on-going 2014 World Cup qualifiers.
Gert announced his wish to leave after a heavy defeat by Guinea Sunday at Conakry. The 1-6 score quashed the last chance for Mozambique to play in the top football tournament in Brazil next year, reports Xinhua.
Mozambique has never participated in the World Cup finals.
Leading Group G is Egypt with 12 points, trailed by Guinea. Mozambique and Zimbabwe remain at the bottom of the table.
“This is my last match in front of the national squad. We missed the qualification and I think there are no conditions for me to continue,” Engels told the media after the match.
