Mumbai, May 17 (IANS) In one of the biggest seizure of drugs, customs officials at Mumbai Airport Friday nabbed a South African woman carrying 26 kg of drugs worth over Rs.13 crore, an official said here.
The woman, identified as Sity Lentin (42), had concealed the drugs in her luggage, said Assistant Commissioner of Customs S. Wankhede said.
Lentin works for an event management company which has operations in India, Canada and Singapore, the official said, and was preparing to board an Ethiopian Airways flight to South Africa.
Acting on a tip-off when Lentin was preparing to board the flight, customs sleuths intercepted her and took her aside for a search, said Wankhede.
An examination of her luggage revealed a false pocket at the bottom in which 26 kg of “party” drugs like cocaine, methamphetamine and ketamine were concealed.
The value of the drugs, samples of which have been sent for forensic analysis, is estimated to be worth more than Rs.13 crore in the open market, and is considered one of the biggest such seizure in recent times.
Investigations revealed that Lentin has been a regular visitor to Mumbai and officials suspect that she could be a regular drug courier.
