Bhubaneswar, May 15 (IANS) The Met Office Wednesday issued a fresh warning for fishermen in Odisha asking them not to venture into the sea as gusty winds triggered by cyclonic storm ‘Mahasen’ would prevail along the coast.
The cyclonic storm ‘Mahasen’ formed over the west central Bay of Bengal has moved north and lay centred about 430 km south of Paradeep, a senior official of the Meteorological Centre Bhubaneswar said.
“It would intensify further and move northeastwards and cross Bangladesh coast between Khepupara and Teknaff close to Chittagong during Thursday night,” he told IANS.
Although it would have no large impact on Odisha, surface winds with speed reaching 40-50 km per hour and gusting to 60 km per hour from a southwesterly direction would prevail along and off state coast, he pointed out.
As a result, the sea condition will be rough to very rough. Fishermen are advised not to venture into sea, he said.
Earlier, the office of the state’s special relief commissioner had issued instructions to the administrative head of 10 coastal districts asking them to closely watch the situation and keep the field functionaries on alert to meet any eventuality.
The state emergency operations centre has been also activated and it has started functioning in the office of special relief commissioner round-the-clock.
