Mumbai, May 7 (IANS) Sending out a strong disciplinary signal, the National Students Union of India (NSUI) has suspended its Mumbai unit chief for allegedly dancing nude at a private party, official sources said here Tuesday.
The order suspending Mumbai NSUI president Suraj Singh Thakur was issued by NSUI president Rohit Chaudhary under instructions from Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, a party official said, requesting anonymity.
Besides Thakur, two other NSUI officials have also been suspended for “indecent” behaviour at the same private gathering at a camp organised last month by Jawaharlal Nehru Leadership Training Institute at Panvel, in adjoining Raigad district.
The suspensions were effected Monday after a video of the trio stripping and dancing nude was uploaded on YouTube and quickly became a rage. The video was removed Tuesday.
According to party sources, Thakur was in a highly inebriated state when he and two others stripped and danced in the party.
Thakur was re-elected as NSUI Mumbai president in December 2012. He had shot to prominence after he led protests against a book penned by A.G. Perarivalan, reportedly a member of the team which assassinated Rajiv Gandhi.
