Mumbai Indians grew stronger as IPL progressed: John Wright

Kolkata, May 27 (IANS) Mumbai Indians coach John Wright commended his team for winning its first Indian Premier League title and maintaining consistency in the two-month-long tournament.

“I am delighted for the boys. It is a tough tournament to win. It is long and there is a lot of travelling involved. The team grew stronger as the tournament progressed,” said Wright, who is also a former India coach.

The New Zealander lauded the role of Ricky Ponting in the side after the former Australia captain chose to sit out for the bulk of the games.

Ponting was seen celebrating with his teammates at Eden Gardens following their 23-run triumph over the Chennai Super Kings.

“It feels great to win. The target is achieved. To be honest, I was just trying to keep up with the younger guys in the team,” Ponting said in a lighter vein.
