Hyderabad airport awarded 5-star rating

Hyderabad, May 30 (IANS) The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), operated by GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL), has been awarded the prestigious 5-star rating by the British Safety Council for its health and safety management system.

RGIA is the only airport in the world to receive this award, said a GHIAL statement.

Outside the aviation industry, only a few organisations in India like Asian Paints, Tata Motors, GAIL, Reliance and L&T have received the award in the last 10 years.

The award criterion is very stringent. There are 995 safety compliance requirements for the health and safety management system covering 57 elements.

In order to get a 5-star rating, a minimum of 92 percent has to be obtained out of a total score of 5,000, whereas RGIA scored 96 percent.

“It is an incredible achievement, particularly considering the fact that implementation of such a system in an operational airport with multiple stakeholders is a Herculean task,” said S.G.K. Kishore, CEO-GHIAL.
