New Delhi, May 2 (IANS) Seeking to corner the government over the death of Sarabjit Singh in Pakistan, the BJP Thursday slammed what it called the weak foreign policy and described Prime Minister Manmohan Singh the “weakest prime minister ever”.
While Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj called Sarabjit Singh’s death a “cold blooded murder”, her counterpart in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley questioned the government’s foreign policy.
“It is a cold blooded murder,” tweeted Sushma Swaraj, following the death of Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh in Pakistan.
“This is not the way civilized nations behave. #Sarabjit Singh,” said her tweet.
In the Rajya Sabha, Leader of Opposition Arun Jaitley called it a day of grief and anger.
“This is a day of deep grief and anger. The way Sarabjit has been killed, the Pakistan government found an alternative to execution of a death sentence,” Jaitley said.
He blamed the government for being weak in its foreign policy which gave Pakistan the courage to do this.
“Even a bird cannot go in the prison cell where those with death sentences are kept. It could not have happened without the involvement of the administration, and the government there. We need to introspect how weak our foreign policy is. China came 19 km inside our boundary,” he said.
“They inherited the Indian dream and converted it in the Indian nightmare,” he added.
Party leader L.K. Advani, in his blog, again called Manmohan Singh as “the weakest prime minister” who was running the most corrupt government.
“I cannot forget that when in 2009, I had described Dr. Singh as the weakest Prime Minister the country has had, some of my own colleagues felt that I was being too severe. But I still hold that it is this attribute of his – weakness – that makes him so subservient to 10, Janpath, and thus unable to avail of the authority innate in this office of Prime Ministership,” he wrote.
The BJP also demanded the government to scale down ties with Pakistan.
“The level of diplomatic relations should be scaled down for the time being, and the Indian High Commissioner should be called back,” BJP president Rajnath Singh said.
Party spokesperson Syed Shahnawaz Hussain said India should scale down ties with Pakistan and step up pressure on China to evacuate the territory it has encroached upon.
“Talk and create pressure on China. But there is no point in talking to Pakistan,” Hussain said.
Sarabjit Singh died Thursday in a Lahore hospital. He had been on death row after conviction in terrorist strikes in Pakistan. He had spent over 20 years in Pakistan jails.
